Losers of the Web

I brain-scribed this list 2 minutes ago, and thought it was worth converting into blog-scribe.

A list of companies/products/shows which had the web in their fingertips (as in, being the hot thing of a particular moment), and lost it (as in, didn’t sell out or get big, or had to shutdown in their particular form).

  • Napster
  • Friendster
  • Technorati
  • Rocketboom
  • Cuil
  • Muxtape

…and there are probably more, but you get the idea.

Point: it’s better to learn from these, not Google or Facebook. There are a lot more things to take out of why Muxtape had to give into the RIAA than how Mark Zuckerberg caused mischief at Harvard.

“Today’s news is tomorrow’s toilet paper.” —This might seem like an obvious quote, but I heard it for the first time today and it kind of stuck.
